Bethany Wind Turbine Committee's January Report

I have obtained a copy of Bethany's "final" wind report. You can download it at http://www.effierover.com/downloads/ReportFinal.pdf

Don't know at this time if the town will offer it on their website (they usually do) or what the general reaction is.

DOD: Turbines effects on radar need more study

A Department of Defense report indicates that commercial wind turbines have the potential to affect radar installations.

The same report, undertaken at the request of Congressman William Delahunt, a Quincy Democrat representing the 10th District, including Cape Cod, calls "overly simplified and technically flawed" a 2004 U.S. Air Force analysis that found a proposed wind farm on Nantucket Sound would have no effect on its PAVE PAWS radar installation on the Upper Cape. The report further calls for a more exhaustive study of the wind farm and its relation to PAVE PAWS.

Ill Winds Blowing

As the year began, Michael Polsky was poised to plant wind farms in the fields of Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Dakota that would power some 3,000 homes. But in March, the CEO of Invenergy received a letter from the Federal Aviation Administration saying the projects could disrupt the radar signals of nearby military installations.

The letter recommended he delay the projects pending results of a Defense Department study. Polsky was stunned, but he's complying. As many as 12 other proposed wind farms received similar warnings. "I can't imagine how turbines located 12 to 40 miles away can interfere with radar," Polsky says.

UK highlights perils to air traffic surveillance of growing wind 'farms'

Air traffic surveillance can be severely degraded unless planners are required to consider aircraft safety

Wind turbines, especially many grouped in a wind farm, can wipe out the effectiveness of primary and secondary radar surveillance systems and radio navigation aids, says the UK Civil Aviation Authority. In a report, the agency calls on the government to require those responsible for siting wind turbines to consider aviation safety as well as other issues.

A New Blip on Wind Power's Radar Screen

Wind power may be flying high, but the young industry fears its growth may be clipped if federal rulemakers and Congress continue to set up new regulatory hurdles.

At the industry's recent annual conference here, one of the topics under discussion was the federal government's intensified interest in checking the height of wind power turbines to make sure they don't interfere with military radar. Until now, the industry pretty much concentrated on fending off criticism about the danger the fast-moving turbine blades can present to bats and birds, as well as the turbines' noise and unsightliness.

Military concerns force DOE to cancel Nevada wind project

The National Nuclear Security Administration scrapped a 325-turbine wind farm project planned for the Nevada Test Site late last week, citing potential problems with nearby Nellis Air Force Base.

NNSA Nevada Operations Office spokesman Darwin Morgan said the Air Force expressed concern that the proposed turbines would interfere with its fighter pilot training as well as cause problems with its radar system. There are no new plans for the site at this point, he said, although the NTS Development Corp. continues to work on the site’s future.

Wind Towers Alter TV Reception

PRINCETON -- Interference with television reception in Wyanet could bring the turbines at Crescent Ridge Wind Farm near Tiskilwa to a halt.

Bureau County Board zoning committee chairman Bill Bennett (R-Neponset) told the board Tuesday night that he was prepared to suspend the company's conditional use permits if a solution could not be found.

"The board needs to be aware that some people in the Wyanet area are having difficulty with TV reception of the Peoria UHF channels, Bennett said. Crescent Ridge has not responded to the TV problems in the area as they said they would in the original agreement. My only recourse is to suspend the conditional use permits until they fix the problems."
